Bristol Aquarium’s Jake Graham said: “Ever since the BBC Springwatch programme featured ‘Spineless Si’ on their ‘Stickleback Cam’ the level of interest in our resident sticklebacks has gone through the roof. “The fact ‘Spiny Norman’ has been rather more successful than ‘Spineless Si’ has also added to his fame.

Sticklebacks are modestly priced and potted pond plants can be excellent value for money. A £4 pond plant can often be the equivalent of as many as three or four £3.50 aquarium pots. Many species don’t often crop up in tropical selections either — like floating Water soldiers. AT THE AQUARIUM The unarmored threespine stickleback is illustrated on The Wave’s mosaic tile mural, Rios de la Vida (Rivers of Life). The fountain, mural and accompanying graphics illustrate the story of our Los Angeles and San Gabriel Rivers.

2017-07-09 · I don't find mosquitoes much of a problem in ponds because invertebrate predators eat most of them - I think particularly the water boatmen. The trouble with fish (especially goldfish and sticklebacks) is that they rapidly breed to a large number which decimates the more interesting pondlife, including tadpoles, newt larvae and damselflies.

Care The Stickleback has a wide area of natural distribution, occurring in most inland coastal waters within the northern hemisphere. Here, they are found in a variety of shallow, heavily vegetated freshwater and brackish environments, including lakes, rivers, streams, …

I have had good luck in breeding the Three-spine Stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) in a densely planted marine aquarium. The nine-spined stickleback lives in extremely weedy ditches and rivers as its small spines do not offer much protection. They have scutes or bony plates all the way down their body. During the breeding season (April to July), the male develops a black belly and builds a nest suspended on a piece of waterweed, about an inch or so above the substrate at the bottom.

Adults occur mainly along weedy bays and backwaters, entering brackish water and to a limited extent, fresh water (Ref. 3814).Feed along the bottom, primarily on diatoms, worms and crustaceans by sucking in the prey with a pipetting action (Ref. 27549). It displays anti-predatory behavior and has nest building habits at breeding time. Easy to keep in ponds and aquariums and easy to breed. Maximum Size: Upto 3″ but on average 1-2″ when mature.
